What Is Chimney Spalling—and Why Are Pieces of Brick Falling Off?

What Spalling Looks Like

Spalling is when the outer face of a brick flakes, pops, or crumbles away, often leaving a rougher, more porous surface exposed underneath. It can affect a single brick or spread across a noticeable section of the chimney, usually starting near the top where weather exposure is worst.

Why Water Is Usually Part of the Story

Spalling is almost always a moisture problem at its root. Water gets absorbed into the brick, and when it freezes, the expansion pushes the outer face off from the inside — it's the same basic mechanism behind most freeze-thaw masonry damage, just visible on an individual brick scale.

How Pittsburgh Winters Accelerate Deterioration

A single freeze-thaw cycle typically doesn't cause visible spalling on its own. It's the accumulation of many cycles over multiple winters — common in this region's climate — that eventually pushes a saturated brick past the point where its face stays intact.

Spalling often starts near the top of the chimney, where weather exposure is greatest.

Why One Damaged Brick Can Signal a Broader Moisture Problem

If one brick is absorbing enough water to spall, nearby brick in the same course is often exposed to similar conditions, even if it hasn't visibly failed yet. That's why spalling is frequently treated as a signal to check the surrounding masonry and water-management components, not just replace the obviously damaged unit.

Repair Depends on the Extent of Damage

A handful of isolated spalled bricks can typically be removed and replaced with matching units. More widespread spalling across a large section may point toward a broader masonry repair or partial rebuild, especially if the underlying cause hasn't been addressed.

How to Reduce Repeat Damage

Addressing whatever let water in — a missing cap, a cracked crown, or unsealed masonry — matters as much as replacing the damaged brick itself. A water repellent treatment on sound surrounding masonry can also reduce how much moisture is absorbed going forward.
