About Steel City Chimney & Fireplace
Steel City Chimney & Fireplace began in Pittsburgh in 1995 with a simple idea: do the work properly, explain it clearly, and treat every home with the same care we would expect in our own.
Pittsburgh has never been a city built on shortcuts. It is a city of brick homes, steep hills, old neighborhoods, changing weather, fireplaces that have been used for generations, and masonry chimneys that have stood through decades of Pennsylvania winters. That environment shaped the way we work.
For more than three decades, Steel City Chimney & Fireplace has focused on helping homeowners maintain, repair, restore, and improve the chimney and fireplace systems that are part of their homes. What started as a local chimney service has grown into a full-service chimney and fireplace company serving Pittsburgh and surrounding communities throughout Western Pennsylvania. But the philosophy behind the company has stayed the same.
Look carefully. Explain honestly. Fix what needs to be fixed. Do the work right.

A Company Built Around the Homes of Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh homes have character. Some were built generations ago with large masonry chimneys and traditional fireplaces. Others have been renovated, expanded, or converted over the years. In newer communities, we see modern fireplace systems alongside traditional brick and masonry construction. That means chimney work here is rarely one-size-fits-all.
A chimney leak in Mt. Lebanon may have a completely different cause from a deteriorating chimney crown in Wexford. An older brick chimney in Pittsburgh may require careful mortar repair, while a fireplace in Cranberry Township may need inspection, liner work, or a new chimney cap. Understanding those differences matters.
Our approach has always been to look at the entire chimney and fireplace system instead of focusing only on the most obvious symptom. Water inside a fireplace does not automatically mean one specific repair. Smoke entering a room does not automatically mean the chimney needs to be rebuilt. Cracked masonry does not always mean the entire structure needs replacement. We inspect the condition, identify the likely cause, explain what we find, and recommend the appropriate next step.
From Chimney Sweeping to Complete Chimney & Fireplace Service
Over the years, chimney systems have changed, building materials have evolved, and homeowners have become more aware of the importance of proper chimney maintenance. Steel City Chimney & Fireplace grew with those needs.
Today, our work includes chimney cleaning and sweeping, chimney inspections, masonry repair, chimney rebuilding, chimney liner services, chimney crown repair, chimney caps, flashing repair, waterproofing, fireplace repair, firebox repair, smoke chamber work, and chimney and fireplace installations.
Some jobs take a relatively simple adjustment or repair. Others involve deteriorated masonry, years of water exposure, damaged liners, or aging chimney components. We approach both types of projects with the same mindset. The goal is not to recommend the biggest job. The goal is to understand the problem and recommend the work that makes sense for the condition of the chimney.
Why the Name Steel City?
Pittsburgh has been known around the world as the Steel City. For us, the name represents more than geography. It represents the character we want our work to reflect: durability, craftsmanship, straightforward service, and pride in the work.
Chimney and masonry work should last. A repair should not simply cover the visible problem while leaving the underlying cause untouched. That is especially important in Western Pennsylvania, where rain, snow, freezing temperatures, moisture, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles can be hard on brick, mortar, crowns, flashing, and other exterior chimney components. We want our work to fit the name on the truck. That is why Steel City is part of our identity.
We Would Rather Explain Than Oversell
One of the most frustrating experiences for a homeowner is being told that something needs to be replaced without understanding why. We believe homeowners deserve a clear explanation.
When we evaluate a chimney or fireplace, we want you to understand what we are seeing. If a component can reasonably be repaired, we will discuss that option. If deterioration has reached the point where a larger repair or replacement makes more sense, we will explain why. There is a difference between selling a project and solving a problem. We have always preferred the second.
The Details Matter
A chimney may look simple from the ground, but it is a system made up of many parts. The crown helps keep water away from the masonry. The cap helps protect the opening. The flashing helps seal the connection between the chimney and roof. The liner protects the flue. The firebox and smoke chamber help manage heat and combustion gases. Brick and mortar protect the structure itself.
When one component begins to fail, the symptoms can appear somewhere else. That is why good chimney work requires attention to detail. Our job is not just to look at the obvious crack or stain. It is to understand what caused it.
Respect for Your Home
Chimney and fireplace work happens in some of the most important areas of a home. Sometimes we are working on the roof. Sometimes around masonry. Sometimes directly inside the living room. We believe professionalism includes more than the repair itself.
It means respecting the property, communicating clearly, keeping the work area organized, and making sure homeowners understand what is happening before work begins. You should never feel like a stranger has taken over your home.
Local Experience Matters
Western Pennsylvania weather is tough on chimneys. Moisture can enter small masonry cracks. Temperatures drop. Water freezes. It expands. A minor crack becomes larger. Mortar begins to deteriorate. Crowns fail. Flashing separates. Brick faces can begin to break down. Then spring rain arrives and exposes problems that may have developed throughout the winter.
These are conditions we see repeatedly throughout Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities. Working locally means understanding those patterns. It also means understanding that many Pittsburgh-area homes were built long before modern chimney systems and current building practices. Older does not automatically mean bad. But older systems often require a more careful evaluation.

Our Approach
Inspect Before Assuming
A chimney problem may have several possible causes. We prefer to understand the condition before recommending a solution.
Repair When Repair Makes Sense
Not every damaged component requires complete replacement. When a practical repair is appropriate, that option should be considered.
Explain the Work
Homeowners should understand what is being repaired and why.
Think Long Term
A cheap patch that fails after another Pennsylvania winter is rarely a good solution. We focus on addressing the underlying condition whenever possible.
Keep It Personal
A company can grow without treating customers like numbers. That has been important to us since 1995.
Communities We Serve
Steel City Chimney & Fireplace serves homeowners throughout Pittsburgh and approximately 60 miles around the city, across Allegheny County and surrounding parts of Western Pennsylvania.

One Simple Standard
The chimney industry has changed considerably since Steel City Chimney & Fireplace started in 1995. Tools have improved. Inspection methods have improved. Materials have improved. Building standards have changed.
But good service is still based on the same things it was built on decades ago: show up ready to work, know the system, look closely, tell the homeowner what you see. Do not make the problem sound bigger than it is. Do not ignore a problem that genuinely needs attention. And when you perform the work, do it with pride.
That is the standard Steel City Chimney & Fireplace continues to work toward every day.
Chimney & Fireplace Services
Every system is different, so the right starting point is understanding the condition of yours.
Built in Pittsburgh. Here for the Long Run.
Steel City Chimney & Fireplace has been part of the Pittsburgh area since 1995. We have grown, expanded our services, and worked on many different types of homes and chimney systems.
But we have never wanted to become the kind of company where everything feels scripted. A homeowner should be able to ask questions. A technician should be able to explain what they see. A repair should have a reason behind it. And the customer should feel comfortable with the work being recommended. That is the kind of company we set out to build. It is still the kind of company we want to be today.
