Fall Fireplace Checklist: What to Check Before Your First Fire
Start Before the First Cold Weekend
Rather than waiting until the first genuinely cold night to think about your fireplace, running through this checklist a few weeks ahead gives time to schedule cleaning or inspection before demand picks up across the industry.
Look for Anything That Changed Since Spring
If you did a spring checkup, compare current conditions against what you noted then — new staining, cracks, or damage that appeared over the summer is worth addressing before regular use resumes.
Confirm the Fireplace Opening Is Clear
Check that nothing has been stored in or around the firebox over the warmer months, and look for any signs of animal activity or nesting material that might have accumulated since the fireplace was last used.
Pay Attention to the Damper
Test that the damper opens and closes fully and seals reasonably well when closed. A damper that's stuck, rusted, or difficult to operate is worth addressing before you need it to work reliably.
Think About Cleaning and Inspection History
If it's been a full year or more since the last cleaning and inspection, fall is the natural time to schedule both before regular use begins for the season.
Check for Moisture Clues
Look for any staining, dampness, or musty smell near the firebox or chimney chase that might indicate a leak developed over the summer months that hasn't been addressed yet.
Do Not Test a Questionable System With a Fire
If anything from this checklist raises a question, it's better to have it evaluated first rather than using the fireplace and hoping for the best — especially for the first fire after a long period of disuse.
