What Does a Chimney Liner Do—and Do I Really Need One?

What Does a Chimney Liner Do—and Do I Really Need One?

The Liner Is the Inside Path You Cannot See From the Street

The flue liner is the passage running the length of the chimney, carrying smoke and combustion byproducts safely out of the home. It's entirely hidden inside the masonry, which is part of why liner problems can go unnoticed for years without a direct inspection.

What a Liner Helps Protect

A liner protects the surrounding masonry from heat and the corrosive effects of combustion byproducts, and it protects the home by containing those byproducts within a properly sized passage instead of letting them reach nearby framing directly.

Common Reasons a Liner Is Evaluated

  • Buying a home with an older chimney of unknown liner condition
  • Installing or replacing a fireplace insert, stove, or furnace
  • A chimney fire in the home's history, however minor
  • General inspection turning up cracking or gaps
Liner condition often only becomes clear with a direct look inside the flue.

Older Chimneys and Changed Appliances

It's common for an older chimney's liner to have been sized for an appliance that's since been replaced, sometimes more than once. A liner appropriate for an old coal or oil system may not be correctly sized for whatever's connected today.

Why a Camera Evaluation Can Matter

Because the liner isn't visible without looking directly inside it, a flashlight check from the top or bottom only shows part of the story. A video inspection camera run along the flue's length gives a much more complete picture of cracks, gaps, or deterioration.

Do Not Choose a Liner Solution Before Understanding the System

Liner material and sizing decisions should follow from what's actually connected to the chimney and what condition the existing liner (or lack of one) is in — not from a generic recommendation applied without that information.
